Tratos Cable Manufacturer

The IEC 60793 series provides a globally recognised framework for testing and measuring the performance of optical fibres. This series ensures consistency and reliability across the design, manufacture, and application of optical fibres used in a wide range of industries — particularly in telecommunications, data transmission, industrial networking, and sensing technologies.

Optical fibre systems form the backbone of modern high-speed communication networks. As demand increases for faster, more reliable data transmission, the need for standardised testing methods becomes even more critical. The IEC 60793 series plays a central role by outlining how to measure physical, mechanical, and optical characteristics of both single-mode and multimode fibres under controlled conditions.

This series helps manufacturers demonstrate compliance, supports procurement and quality control processes, and ensures that products meet the required performance levels before deployment in the field. It also aids system integrators and end users in comparing fibre products on a common basis.

The series is split into two main categories:

  • IEC 60793-1-x, which covers the specific test methods for measuring fibre characteristics
  • IEC 60793-2-x, which sets out the performance specifications for different classes of fibre

Together, these standards ensure that optical fibres perform as expected throughout their service life, even when subjected to harsh mechanical or environmental conditions.

Structure of the IEC 60793 Series

The IEC 60793 series is divided into two main categories:

Part 1 – Measurement Methods and Test Procedures

These documents provide detailed testing procedures for a wide range of physical, mechanical, geometrical, and transmission characteristics. Each test method is assigned a sub-part number in the format IEC 60793-1-X. For example:

  • IEC 60793-1-1 – General and guidance on test procedures.
  • IEC 60793-1-20 to 1-60 – Cover specific tests such as diameter measurement, tensile strength, temperature cycling, splice performance, attenuation, and bandwidth.

These parts are fundamental in ensuring standardisation in optical fibre measurement techniques.

Part 2 – Product Specifications

These documents specify the characteristics of different classes and categories of optical fibres. Each is identified by a part number in the format IEC 60793-2-X. For example:

  • IEC 60793-2-10 – Multimode fibres (Type A1 and A2)
  • IEC 60793-2-30 – Single-mode fibres (Type B)
  • IEC 60793-2-50 – Single-mode fibres (Type C)

These parts define the minimum performance requirements for fibre types used in telecommunications and other optical transmission applications.
