IEC 61089
IEC 61089 – Round Wire Concentric Lay Overhead Electrical Stranded Conductors
IEC 61089 defines the electrical and mechanical characteristics of round wire concentric lay overhead stranded conductors. These conductors are commonly used in overhead power transmission and distribution networks, where their strength, conductivity, and resistance to environmental conditions are essential for system reliability and performance.
The standard provides a consistent framework for classifying conductor types, including those made from aluminium, aluminium alloys, and combinations with steel or other materials used to enhance mechanical strength. It outlines the requirements for conductor construction, dimensional tolerances, tensile strength, and resistance, supporting manufacturers and utilities in ensuring product consistency and interoperability.
IEC 61089 replaces several earlier standards, including IEC 60207, 60208, 60209 and 60210, consolidating them into a single, more comprehensive document. By doing so, it simplifies the specification and procurement process for a wide range of overhead conductor designs used in both new installations and maintenance projects.
